What is a Pressure Switch?

Pressure switches convert the energy (or pressure) that is in a system and converts it to an electrical signal.  A pressure switch has a set point (or limit) that when that limit is reached, the pressure switch will send a signal that the pressure has reached that limit.  The limit can be as pressure is rising or falling as well as when vacuum pressure is rising or falling.  The signal can be a contact opening, a contact closing, or an electronic High or Low signal.

What is a Vacuum Switch?

Vacuum switches operate differently than a pressure switch.  While a pressure switch operates in the pressure ranges above atmospheric pressure, a vacuum switch operates in the pressure range that is below atmospheric pressure. Typical applications would be in the HVAC/R, food and beverage, and medical industries.

Capabilities: Gems Sensors is a leading manufacturer of both user-adjustable pressure switches and factory set pressure switches. Some typical applications could be on an air compressor.  When the air contained in the compressor’s tank is low, the pressure switch will trigger the compressor to start pumping and create more pressure in the tank.  Once the pressure in the tank reaches the desired pressure (set point), the compressor will turn off. This cycling will repeat as needed.

Another application can be achieved within a water pump system.  The water pump will be on long as there is demand for water pressure.  As the pressure in the system reaches the limit (the set point), the pressure switch will then trigger the pump to turn off.  As the pressure in the system now drops below the set point for low pressure, the pressure switch will trigger the water pump to turn back on and increases the pressure in the water system.  This cycling will repeat as needed.
